When things com together

A little while ago, I threw the gauntlet down and proclaimed that the mutilated and drawn-on walls in the living room and dining room, along with the entire grey-meets-Pepto-Bismol-pink bathroom, were soon going to be history. I have been thinking of what colors I want for said ugly bathroom for over a year (yes, really for a whole year!), because I wanted to be sure of what I wanted. It so happened that the children had a dentist appointment down in Wausau (1 1/2 hours south), which also had a Joanne’s. What great timing, right? Winking smile

I knew the color scheme that I wanted and set about to find the fabric that went with it. In May of 2010, we traveled to PA for Adam’s cousins wedding and we stayed with one of his Uncle and Aunts house. They had just re-painted their bathroom and it is this awesome shade of pumpkin. I knew I wanted something like that for our bathroom, something fun and fresh, something that is totally beyond what I have done so far. Yet I knew Adam would really hate it if I got too funky. So I kept the paint color fairly quite and got my “fresh funky” fix with mini quilt on the wall. Oh, and with a giant starflower shower curtain!

The faucet on the bathtub had been leaking for years and since I was going to paint it (and he knew I was serious), he fixed it. Thankfully (for me), things didn’t go quite as he wanted and we ended up putting a shower head in there (which is something I have wanted in there for a long time! Having 2 showers in a house of many people is nice!!).

I am very  pleased with how everything came together! I suppose it goes to show you that if you take a year your time to think about something, it has a good chance of working out in the end.

Please forgive the lack of good “before” pictures. By the time that I remembered to take them, I has half way done painting. Sorry.

My giant starflower curtain!                         And behind curtain #1….. because there is a cabinet that we wanted to keep above the bathtub faucet…

we chose to have a shower curtain rod, for the liner, to be one that attaches to the ceiling. Like what you would have with a claw foot tub. Since the floor is grey tile, I wanted to incorporate that color into the rest of the room as well, to tie it all together nicely.

I chose stars to be my “theme”.

It all started with this star

(this is the star mini quilt that I am entering in the Celebrate Color contest!)

I saw the pattern for it here and I knew I wanted to make it for the bathroom. Then my travels led to the giant starflower tutorial, which I thought would make for a great shower curtain. After that, it led to this….

Okay, so this one is not a star. But I thinks it’s cute in here anyway.

I had made a quilt using this star block before and decided that I wanted it in here, too. I even got the children in on the act.

This is mine….                                                            and this is Grace’s. She did all the sewing and quilting by herself, with little direction from me. Didn’t she do a great job?! And she’s only 8!! Maacah and Isaac did one each as well. Maacah’s is not hung up yet and Isaac’s still needs the binding on his.

I stenciled the stars on the cabinets backwards. I painted the swatches on the cupboards with the grey first. Then I taped my stars on top of the grey and carefully painted the orange over the top. I wasn’t sure how it would work, but they all came out fine!

Oh yes, the bathroom is much better now!

And so is the living room and dining room!
