Damaris’s quilt

I finished it! Yay!!!! I didn’t think I would in time for the dead line, but I did. And oh, does Damaris love it! I used mostly “Apple of My Eye” from The Quilted Fish and the pattern is by Melissa Corry of Happy Quilting, “Starburst”. This was a quilt-along, the first I have done and was fun! It sure kept things moving along! (I’m linking up with Crazy Mom Quilts and The Free Motion Quilting Project)

This is block #1. I kept the blocks separate, instead of sewing them together, for the quilting. It’s called “quilt-as-you-go”. It’s a large quilt and I wanted to do custom quilting on it. Keeping the blocks separate, 32” square + the sashing, was a good choice.

Block #2. Damaris told me, as I was still finishing it up, that she really likes it and promises not to pee on it. Open-mouthed smile That’s a good thing, I suppose.

Block #3. All of the designs came from The Free Motion Quilting Project, with Leah Day or the book “Free Motion Quilting with Angela Walters”. (except for the stippling in block #1 and the loopy hearts in #4. Those I already knew and have done before.)

And block #4. This one is my favorite. I love to quilt words into my quilts. So I decided to quilt “I love you” into the quilt. To liven things up a bit, I quilted those words in 20 different languages. Yes, that’s right. 20!!

There is Spanish, Basque, Chinese, Russian, Hawaiian,Czech, French, Mandarin, Danish, Laos, Irish, Potawatomi (one of the Native American dialects around our area), Pilipino, German, Italian, Thai, Swedish, Polish, Japanese, and, of course, English. You can see in the 2 bottom pictures where in the quilt block I quilted these words. While I quilted the other white portions with white thread, I quilted these words in Baby Pink. You know, pink for love words. Red heart

The finished quilt! I really, really love it! I simply sewed 1/4” from the seam between the blocks to attach the back to the front.

The back. She loves purple and so when I found this sheet at Goodwill, I knew it would be perfect for the back of her quilt. I had to piece it a bit on the side with  another purple sheet from my stash.

A close up of the back, with the top of the sheet still intact. I love the effect that the lace gives the look, quite sweet. And it is bound with a simple yellow solid.

Here it is on her bed. A bit big for a little girl, but she won’t stay little forever. And she, hopefully, will have this quilt that long. (please disregard the state of the wall. The girls room desperately needs to be redone and this Mama desperately needs some energy to do so!)

She is willing to share!

Be sure to visit Happy Quilting to see the parade of finished Starburst quilts! I’ll be there!!

  1. Love how your Starburst came out. The fabrics are so fresh and adorable. And those borders with the triangles work so well with the original pattern. Great finish!

  2. Aww thanks Alicia! And you never know, there may or may not be a little boy quilt in the works. *wink*

  3. It’s a lovely quilt. I’m sure your daughter will see it as tangible proof of mom’s love for her for years to come. You did a great job!

  4. Very pretty quilt. I’m glad she likes it so much. It’s so cute that she fits on one quarter of it now. As someone who loves an oversized blanket, this looks “just right” to me anyway! She can use this all her life, and I’ve no doubt that she will. Any stains, damages and repairs that occur along the way will just help to tell its story and remind her of specific memories.

  5. Wonderful quilt. Great blog! Seeing your little girl with her gift is so touching. Isn’t Melissa Corry great? I am using her Braided Irish Chain pattern for a wedding present.
