Day 5

Tonight will be short since it’s so late (it is now 11:30 pm).

Today was a good day. Nathaniel’s breathing is in the normal range. Yay! And they took him off the EEG machine. The doctor did say that there are some little seizure activity going on, but they are so small and brief that they are not considered worthy of chasing or worrying about. They haven’t given him any anti-seizure medication since yesterday morning and the blood test they did today told them that his level is just under the “acceptable” range. They want it between 30-50 (I don’t know the measurement they use) and the amount in his blood is 49. But he is waking up even more. In fact, tonight at his 10 o’clock feeding, I was holding him while he started to eat and he turned his head to begin rooting! (he is still being fed through a tube that goes into his nose and down to his tummy.) The nurse was just shocked when she saw that. And he was non-to-thrilled when the pacifier was given to him instead of what he wanted. He was very comical in the way he kept shaking his head! The little man knew what he wanted and that “plug” wasn’t it! He is opening his eyes, too. I am hoping that we can start nursing tomorrow. If he doesn’t take to that, then we will bottle feed my milk to him to get him to feeding well so we can go home. Then I’ll work on getting him to nurse. But that is only if he is awake enough tomorrow.

I had some friends come and see us tonight. They didn’t tell me they were coming and it was such a nice surprise! It was also good to have the children here. They seem to be a bit stuck in “it’s not our schedule” kind of behavior. In their defense, we really haven’t been in our regular schedule for over a week. Last week was so crazy with me going in and out of the hospital and having contractions and such. Then I’m haven’t been home since Friday and they have been with one person or another, but not their parents. So things are a bit wild with them. Which is why today was a bit frustrating. Okay, it was very frustrating with them. But it was still good to have them here. It will take a day or two to get back in the swing of things. At least where listening and obeying Mama are concerned.
